🏃 What is Cross Country?

Cross country running takes place on grass, trails and parkland rather than on the track or road. Courses often include hills, uneven ground and natural obstacles, making every race different, challenging and exciting.

⭐ Why Take Part?

Cross country offers something for every athlete and helps to:

💪 Build strength and endurance

🧠 Develop confidence and resilience

🏃 Learn race tactics

❤️ Improve fitness for all athletics disciplines

🤝 Make new friends and be part of a team

🌳 Enjoy running outdoors

One of the best parts of cross country is the fantastic team spirit. Throughout the season there are opportunities to compete both individually and as part of a club team, with athletes supporting each other every step of the way.

The season is suitable for athletes of all abilities—from those aiming to compete at County and National level to those who simply want to enjoy running with friends and representing Portmarnock AC.

📅Dublin Juvenile Cross Country Competitions

The Dublin juvenile cross country season offers two fantastic competition series, both organised by Dublin Athletics.

Dublin Cross Country League

The Dublin Cross Country League is a series of races held throughout September and October and is the perfect introduction to cross country racing. The league is suitable for athletes of all abilities and provides a relaxed, friendly environment where runners can gain experience, improve their fitness and enjoy competing alongside their clubmates.

Athletes score points across the league series, with both individual and club performances contributing towards the overall standings.

Dublin Juvenile Cross Country Championships

Athletes compete for individual and team medals while also aiming to qualify for the National Championships.

Every athlete who competes contributes to the club team, making every runner an important part of Portmarnock AC's success.

  • Most importantly... enjoy the experience and cheer on your teammates!

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need spikes?

No. Spikes are optional, especially for younger athletes or those trying cross country for the first time. A good pair of running shoes is perfectly suitable for many races.

What should I wear?

Wear your Portmarnock AC club vest, running shorts or leggings and trainers or spikes. Bring warm clothing to put on before and after your race.

How far will I have to run?

The race distance depends on your age group. Distances increase gradually as athletes get older and are designed to be appropriate for each age category.

I've never done cross country before. Can I still take part?

Absolutely! Cross country is for everyone, regardless of ability or experience. Many of our athletes try it for the first time each season and quickly discover how much they enjoy it.

Will I be racing on my own?

No! Although you'll complete the course individually, you'll be racing alongside athletes from your own age group and representing Portmarnock AC with your teammates. Everyone encourages each other before, during and after the race.

Is cross country only for fast runners?

Not at all! Cross country is about taking part, challenging yourself and enjoying being part of the team. Every athlete is welcome, whatever their ability.

What happens if it's raining?

The race almost always goes ahead! Cross country is an outdoor sport, so be prepared for a little mud and bring warm, dry clothes to change into afterwards.

Do parents need to stay?

Yes. Parents or guardians are responsible for their child before and after their race and are encouraged to stay, cheer on all of the athletes and enjoy the great atmosphere.

Who do I ask if I have questions?

Your coaches are always happy to help.
