About Us

Portmarnock AC has a large, friendly Senior / Masters group, with athletes competing in middle and long distance road and track racing (800m to marathon), ultra running, cross country and mountain running.

Dermot Kelly and Pat Healy are the Senior Coaches. Training throughout the year ranges from base building, to hill work, to more high intensity training such as interval, fartlek, and tempo sessions. Most sessions consist of 15min warm up, some light stretching, 25 min. main speed work, 15 min. warm down and stretching. Training load builds over time with a view to peaking for specific club selected races.

Typical sessions include:

  • 8 to 12*200m hills recovering downhill
  • 8 to 12*400m with 45sec recovery @3k pace
  • 4 to 6*800m with 90sec recovery @5k pace
  • Tempo and tempo interval runs
  • Pyramids

Often training is followed by stretching or strength and conditioning sessions. First timers to the group just come along to training and the coach will explain the training format. Try it out for 2 weeks after which you will need to join the club for insurance purposes if you wish to continue.

Weekday Training

Tuesday and Thursday at 7pm, meeting outside Portmarnock Community School.

Weekend Training

On Saturdays many people from the club regularly run the Malahide park run. Sundays at 9am we meet outside the main entrance to the Portmarnock Sports and Leisure Club at 9am. We generally run down to and around Malahide Castle on the grass, passing the main car park on the back road at 9:20am. We generally cover between 12 and 20 km’s but the run generally caters for all requirements. On occasion we do a trail run in Howth.
